As chief operating officer and managing director at BLACKLIGHT, John Matas works with the boards and executive leadership of client partners and customers, helping them to evolve how they address security in a dynamic and rapidly-changing business environment. Under his guidance, BLACKLIGHT has developed practical approaches to managing security, corporate inquiries, and risk while enabling innovation in our digital era.

Previously, Matas served as corporate principal of fraud strategy and profit protection for Macy’s Inc./FDS Bank where he worked closely with the c-suite and leadership team to protect the Macy’s brand, omni-commerce structure, and reputation from evolving and aggressive fraud and cybersecurity threats.

Prior to this, he served as vice president asset protection, investigations, and fraud for Macy’s Inc. With his deep technical and industry knowledge in the digital and cyber fields, his expertise is sought after by public and private sectors, and he is often invited to speak in venues around the country.  Matas is respected for his ability to communicate technical topics to business and high level audiences with ease.


An information broker and industry influencer, Matas is an executive leader whose history of success in in the financial crime discipline is directly related to his ability to stay abreast of trending threats to continuously create strategic initiatives designed to protect property and critical business data. Matas is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Financial Crimes Investigator (CFCI), and expert in Neuro Linguistics Programming (NLP). He is known for his curiosity, challenging the status-quo, and embracing the thought process constant and never ending improvement. He continues to seek out challenging roles and environments, and to bring his unique and creative perspective to bear.
